Gavros, ISIS only works with it controlling land. It's perfectly simple. Remove the land from ISIS control and they will fade away. You cannot have a caliphate with no land.

Of course the other issue is ISIS is inspiring young radicalised men and women who are lone wolves. There's also to be an rhument made that if ISIS went something else would come in it's place which is what has happened with the reduction in al queadas influence.

Gavros it's true that some well educated Muslims are "signing up" to the extremist cause as you put it but they are the minority. The majority are former petty criminals and morons. Look at the Danish Muslim who carried out those shootings... Drug dealer. The guy from Camberwell, thick as pig shit failure in life. The majority of Western born Muslim terrorists are thick and easy to indoctrinate. They do NOT try to recruit people in mosques because anyone with an education in Islamic teachings would tell these recruiters to fuck off.

I am of course interested in finding out about an ideology that seeks to destroy my way of life and me if I do not submit to it. I dont see how anyone could not be. However, it holds about as much appeal - or less - to me than the temptation to convert to ancient Greek religion after watching Jason and the Argonauts.

There's a lot to admire about them in a way Griff. Their ideological integrity, for one thing. Their organisation. Their dedication. We've been underestimating them since 9/11, and we continue to underestimate them, because we dont understand the religious underpinnings of the movement. You say it's horrible what they do and no normal human would advocate it, let along think about it, but youre failing to look into the psychological state of these people, who subscribe to a faith that relegates every else to the status of at best second class citizenship and worthy of death. This is what they believe they have to think like. They have to kill, they have to terrify, they have to take slaves, they have to behead, they have to be polygamous, they have to kill gays, they have to kill apostates, they have to kill 'the enemy' (currently all shia, coptic christians and westerners) and they have to subjugate women because their definition of their religion demands that.

Think about the women that have gone out there. Loads, in the full knowledge that they will be effectively housebound and their rights taken away from them. It has to be a pretty strong call to want to do that, but many women are. That's the power of the religious calling.

For two people who profess to dislike these folk, you give them an awful lot of credit, but maybe that's part of the new characterisation of them, so that we're all wary of anyone with a beard, and none of them are to be trusted.

Personally, I don't think its anything like as complicated. And I also think that the constant highlighting of inflammatory sections of the texts affords these people an 'excuse' they do not deserve.

Firstly, billions of people worldwide are 'exposed' to these texts, so if there's even 2 million who follow the ISIS mantra, we are still talking about a minute percentage who interpret them and use them in a certain way. ie. it is their CHOICE.

More importantly, stick any (normal) 2 year old kid in front of Jaws, or some such, and they will get upset. Call it a soul, call it empathy, call it what you like, but as humans we are all (apart from the VERY odd exception) born with a fundamental sense of right and wrong., good and bad.
From that point, everything is choice.
These people CHOOSE to behead people, to blow people up, whatever. There is no magic book that makes them do it. If it was in any way magical, everyone who read oit would do the same. They do not. They choose to do it.

To CHOOSE to go out and commit these acts, you are either evil, mentally ill, fundamentally fucking stupid, or a combination of the three. They, and you, need to stop hiding behind a fucking book and take responsibility for their choices.

Stupid? Not really. It takes a certain amount of intelligence and dedication to go through the source material of Islamism and come to the fairly clear conclusion that it suggests. And this is the point. Islamism is firmly and clearly rooted in Islam. To say otherwise is ridiculous. And the power that ISIS offers to believers in the form of a life led under a pure Islamic state and under a Caliph is stronger than the simple martyrdom offered by Al Qaeda.

Again, that's a pretty weak analysis. There are hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who would willingly fight for an Islamic state both at home and abroad if they can be convinced that it has re-established the Caliphate. The longer we leave them alone, the more they will convince.

To be honest, I think the most wise and honest commentary I've heard on this whole subject came from Boris.
People attracted by it are losers who have no success with the opposite sex, and need to feel empowered by imagining something else.

Forgive me, but I'm not all that concerned about us being destroyed by such people. They're more likely to shit their own pants than bring down the whole of Western civilisation.

Only millions of people willing to say, look, we've been extremely nice about this for a long time, but it's really time for humanity to grow up and live in reality would balance the millions doing the other. It'll never happen obviously, and the end game will be planes flying into nuclear power stations and the inevitable to and fro from that point. But it's a shame.
